The Beauty of Zero Maintenance
One of the biggest advantages of LiFePO4 over lead-acid is the complete elimination of maintenance tasks. Here is what you do not have to do:
- No watering or topping off electrolyte
- No equalization charging
- No specific gravity testing
- No acid spill cleanup
- No ventilation requirements
What You Should Do
While LiFePO4 batteries are truly maintenance-free, a few simple practices maximize their lifespan:
Keep Terminals Clean
Every 6-12 months, check that terminals are clean and tight. A light wipe with a dry cloth is all that is needed. No corrosion buildup like lead-acid.
Store at Partial Charge
For long-term storage (months without use), store at 50-70% state of charge in a cool, dry location. The self-discharge rate is less than 3% per month — far lower than lead-acid.
Avoid Extreme Heat
While Dakota Lithium batteries handle temperatures from -20°C to 60°C, prolonged exposure to extreme heat above 45°C accelerates aging. Keep batteries in shaded or ventilated locations when possible.
Use the Right Charger Profile
Ensure your charger is set to the LiFePO4 charging profile (14.4V for 12V batteries). Using a lead-acid charging profile will not damage the battery thanks to the BMS, but it may not fully charge it.
