Short Answer: Yes
Dakota Lithium LiFePO4 batteries are compatible with all major solar charge controllers, inverters, and balance-of-system components. Here is what you need to know to ensure a perfect match.
Solar Charge Controllers
Your MPPT or PWM controller must support LiFePO4 charging profiles. Most modern controllers do:
- Victron SmartSolar MPPT: Full LiFePO4 support, Bluetooth monitoring
- Renogy Rover/Wanderer: LiFePO4 preset available
- EPever Tracer: Programmable for LiFePO4 voltage curves
Key setting: Charge voltage should be 14.2-14.6V for 12V batteries, 28.4-29.2V for 24V systems.
Inverters
Any inverter that matches your battery voltage works with LiFePO4. Popular compatible options:
- Victron MultiPlus: 800W to 5000W, built-in charger, programmable
- Victron Phoenix: Pure sine wave, compact
- Aims Power: Budget-friendly pure sine wave options
Alternator Charging (RVs and Boats)
Use a DC-DC charger between your alternator and lithium battery bank. Direct alternator charging can overload some alternators due to the low internal resistance of LiFePO4 batteries. Recommended: Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12 30A.
Series and Parallel Configurations
- Parallel (same voltage, more capacity): Up to 4 batteries in parallel — connect positive to positive, negative to negative
- Series (higher voltage): Two 12V in series = 24V system, four 12V in series = 48V system
- Use same model and age batteries for best results
BMS Communication
Dakota Lithium batteries include built-in BMS that automatically manages cell balancing, temperature monitoring, and protection. No external BMS required. The BMS disconnects the battery if any parameter goes out of safe range.
