Description
The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is an isolated DC-DC charger that charges your house battery from your vehicle’s alternator while driving. With adaptive 3-stage charging, built-in Bluetooth, engine detection, and configurable LiFePO4 profiles, it’s the standard for RV, van, and marine dual-battery systems. 360W output at 30A keeps your Dakota Lithium house bank topped up on every drive.
Key Features
- ✓ 30A / 360W output — charges your 12V house battery at 30A from your vehicle alternator. Adds ~1 hour of charge per hour of driving.
- ✓ Adaptive 3-stage charging — bulk, absorption, float. Treats your house battery like a proper charger, not just a voltage feed.
- ✓ Built-in Bluetooth — monitor charge state, configure profiles, and view history via the VictronConnect app on your phone.
- ✓ LiFePO4 profile — pre-configured 14.4V absorption with proper termination. No external limiters or regulators needed.
- ✓ Galvanic isolation — input and output have separate chassis grounds. Critical for marine installs and vehicles with sensitive electronics.
- ✓ Engine detection — automatically starts charging when the alternator activates. Stops when engine is off to protect starter battery.
- ✓ Unlimited parallel — connect multiple units for 60A, 90A, or more. Each one is independently smart.
- ✓ 5-year Victron warranty — backed by the global leader in off-grid power electronics.

How It Works
- Engine starts — alternator voltage rises above threshold → Orion-Tr detects engine running
- Bulk charge — full 30A flows to house battery until it reaches absorption voltage (14.4V for LiFePO4)
- Absorption — holds voltage steady, current tapers as battery fills
- Float — battery full, minimal maintenance current (or off for LiFePO4)
- Engine stops — Orion-Tr shuts down, protecting starter battery from back-feed
Applications
- RV/Motorhome — charge house battery bank while driving between campsites. No generator needed.
- Van life builds — essential component for alternator-based charging alongside solar.
- Marine dual-battery — isolated design prevents ground loops between engine and house systems.
- Overlanding / 4×4 — rugged aluminum enclosure handles -40°C to +55°C, vibration, and dust.
- Work trucks — charge tool batteries, inverter banks, and auxiliary systems from the alternator.
Compatible Batteries
- Dakota Lithium 12V 100Ah — full charge from ~50% in 1.5 hours of driving
- Dakota Lithium DL+ 12V 135Ah — within the 150A alternator limit for combined charging
- Dakota Lithium DL+ 12V 320Ah — use 2 Orion-Tr in parallel for 60A (adequate supplemental charge)
- Any 12V LiFePO4 bank — configure via VictronConnect Bluetooth app
FAQ
Do I need the isolated or non-isolated version?
Choose isolated (this product) for marine installs, vehicles with different grounding points between engine and house, or any situation where starter and house batteries have separate negative bus bars. Choose non-isolated (Product 42) only when both batteries share the exact same chassis ground — typically simple vehicle setups with a single grounding point.
Can I use this with a smart alternator?
Yes. Smart alternators reduce output when the starter battery is full. The Orion-Tr works downstream of the alternator — it takes whatever voltage the alternator provides (10-17V) and converts it to a proper charging profile for your house battery. No conflict with variable-voltage smart alternators.
How many do I need for a 200Ah battery bank?
One unit (30A) fully charges a 200Ah bank from 50% in about 3.3 hours of driving. For faster charging on long-range vehicles, parallel two units (60A) to halve that time. There’s no maximum — add as many as your alternator can support.
Does it work with the BMV-712?
Yes. When connected via VE.Direct to a GX device alongside a BMV-712, the system can implement SOC-based charging — the Orion-Tr receives state-of-charge data and adjusts behavior. Without a GX device, it works standalone using voltage-based algorithms.
